That day at work, my mind kept wandering back to what happened earlier. Then my husband called me with some news - he'd be going out of town for a while. In the evening when he returned home, public grandparents had already eaten dinner and left food for me. They were acting strange again.
Later that night, my husband told our parents that there were mice in the house and that every time his sister went to the bathroom, she needed someone to accompany her because she was afraid of them (and also prone to itching). He added that sometimes she would laugh uncontrollably whenever someone tickled her - which made everyone laugh even harder.
From then on, our family's atmosphere improved significantly thanks to my husband's cleverness in diffusing tension between us and public grandparents. Sometimes all it takes is a little white lie or creative solution to resolve awkward situations within families before they escalate into something worse.
